I live in Portland, land of the barcades, and whenever I travel to Iowa I try to spend as much time at this spot because it beats out 99% of the barcades in Oregon. Idek where to begin on what I love the most…every machine is 25¢, any type of beer you could imagine is on tap, service is phenomenal, and the TVs are always playing classics from the 90s anything from WWE to boy meets world. They have Nintendo games you can play on a tv or projector, they have pinball machines in great condition and killer queen, and I just CANNOT get enough of this place. 10/10 100% of the time and I look forward to coming to Iowa because of this bar, and family of course See you next year
Up-Down is a must-visit barcade in the East Village. Since moving back to Des Moines over 5 years ago, Up-Down has become my favorite spot. It's the perfect place to hang out with friends for a date or just for a good time. They have 10 pinball machines and a wide selection of retro arcade games. They also offer a variety of beers on tap and fun video game-inspired cocktails and dishes. The pizza is my personal favorite, with slices priced at $4 or $5 each. It can get pretty crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, especially when Wooly's has a show, so I prefer visiting on less busy weeknights when I can freely walk around and play whatever games I want.
Place had a cool atmosphere. Old arcade games and two bars (one upstairs and one downstairs). Pizza was ok, 5$ a slice. Staff was great, all pretty nice. The one issue is the arcade games themselves. While the games are cool and I wanted to play them, half of them are broken or don’t work. Good luck finding a working ski ball machine. Even though there’s six of em, you won’t find any that register the 100 point corner shot, and will most likely steal your coins. I get the appeal, but the games are your main draw, make sure they’re all working please.
Cool little arcade bar in the east village right next to Wooly’s. Lots of old retro arcade games, pinball, skee ball. Most were working but several were not. Decent craft beer list and they had some mixed drinks/cocktails. Beers were a little pricey but not way out of line. Pizza is okay as is the cheesey bread. People working there seemed nice.
Great little gaming bar. Fantastic place to waste some time. Friendly staff. Playing classic pinball games is always a really neat expierence. Their quarter machines have had broken credit card readers for a long time but you can use your card to get quarters at the bar.
I've never seen staff members be so quick to respond to a fight starting up. 1 guy RAN full speed from 1 end of the bar to the other and had it handled in no time. Impressive and entertaining
There are a lot of fantastic arcade games and the two floors make the place feel very spacious. The pizza is also really good - the slices are huge! This is my favorite place in Des Moines!

This is a DSM staple. Such a great atmosphere and wonderful staff that work here.
