After a delightful cross-country walk, we enjoyed a well-deserved coffee and cake at Willow Trees Café. The refreshments were excellent, and it was lovely to sit outside by the River Lea, where we even spotted a swan with her cygnets. Parking is quite limited at the café and in the surrounding area, so most visitors either walk from Wheathampstead via the Lea Valley Walk or cycle from Harpenden along the old railway line, which is also part of the Lea Valley Walk. The café provides bike racks for cyclists. It's important to note that the café is only open on weekends and bank holiday Mondays from the May Bank Holiday weekend to the August Bank Holiday Monday. The coffee was disappointing. However, I would rate the dining experience and service both at 4 stars, while the atmosphere by the river and in the greenery deserves a solid 5 stars. They've removed the children's menu, but it's still a nice spot for brunch with kids. If you order rolls, wraps, or baked goods from the take-away menu, you can enjoy them by the riverbank. Otherwise, if you order from the dine-in menu, you’ll have to eat inside or on the balcony. Overall, I recommend this place.
The flow of the restaurant is incredible, and the setting is beautifully agricultural, offering the best local brunch we've discovered. Unlike many places, their vegetarian options are abundant and just as appealing as the meat dishes, all made with fresh, local ingredients. It's a popular spot for cyclists and dog walkers, yet it maintains a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. We visit them regularly!
We were recommended to go to this cafe as part of a walk, it was a lovely find. Only open Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, it offers a large range of delicious, fresh cakes, good choice of drinks and a fine breakfast/brunch menu. First and last visit to the Willow Trees Cafe in Wheathampstead Herts. Open only on weekends . arrived on a Sunday morning only to find a long queue . Waited 25 mins in hot weather to find that you order your food as you walk in the door and orders not taken at he table . What happens when it rains ? Over priced drinks and cakes its not the place for me.
My unexpected visit here was quite enjoyable. Though it was busy, the staff managed everything very well and were very professional. The restaurant was also very clean. The selection of tortas was impressive and definitely worth trying. I highly recommend checking this place out!
Beautiful family run cafe. Set in converted farm buildings and set back from the road. Well worth seeking out. All decked out for Christmas with large decorated tree at my visit. Small terrace with views over the river. Idyllic. Fantastic homemade cakes to finish you off.
Found this place flicking through Instagram and I’m so glad we did! Sandwiches were huge, absolutely delicious and very reasonable. We tried a selection of the cakes on offer and all very good. Lady serving us was very nice polite we’ll be back! Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
Had a delicious brunch at this quaint, riverside cafe. Very calming and friendly in a sweet location. The selection of cakes is fantastic also.
