We've eaten here twice this year. It was very crowded when we went in March but only waited about 20 mins for a table. Then we went in May. It wasn't crowded at all but it seemed like they were short staffed. We waited 45 mins to be seated. Then we waited waited before they ended up seating 2 other parties at our table. So they literally made us wait for more people to show up before we could get started. No one had come to take our drink order or appetizers. When our sushi finally came, our hibachi had already been ½ way done and was brought out directly before the miso salad. From start to finish, we were there for 3hrs. . . The most troubling part of the evening was when the chef repeatedly referred to my daughter as "sir." My husband corrected him three times, and I corrected him twice. Eventually, my daughter spoke up and said, "I'm a girl." The chef looked at her blankly, and when she repeated herself, he simply said, "Okay." This upset her, and when my husband asked the chef to apologize, he ignored the request entirely. My daughter was so upset that she ran to the bathroom, with me following closely behind. Afterward, the chef did apologize to my husband, but when my husband requested that he apologize to our daughter instead, the chef responded, "Her hair is short; how was I supposed to know?" Didn't know about the 20% service charge until we got the bill. Was this a built in tip or an additional charge? We were a small party. I'm accustomed to the gratuity being added for a large party. I really now regret leaving a tip on top of that fee...I'm so sick of the expectation to over tip eveywhere I go!!! This dinner was way too expensive. We used to come here for special occasions. I won't be going back. Also my chair was dirty with grease from the grill which got all over my shorts and then on to my couch before I noticed it. Have 2 very large black grease stains on my cushions that I now have to try and steam clean.
I just celebrated my birthday with my wife and two sisters at Yamato's, and it was fantastic! The food, atmosphere, and entertaining chef exceeded all expectations. I thought I might still be hungry after the meal, but I ended up taking home at least half of my food! I'm already looking forward to enjoying those leftovers tonight. The dressing on the starter salad might just be the best I've ever had. I highly recommend trying the Kiko combination meal—it features filet, lobster, and shrimp, so you can't go wrong! I rated this restaurant 4 stars because they automatically add an 18% gratuity to every check, even for just one person. I don't mind tipping; I just prefer to tip based on the service I receive. I understand when it's a party of four or more, but for a single diner, it feels a bit excessive. On the positive side, the food was delicious!
I have never been disappointed. We tend to come here for special occasions. The food has always been excellent. The show the chef puts on varies by chef and ranges from ok to WOW.
