Yummy Yummy Knödel is one of these inconceivable, small, “walk down” restaurants in Toronto’s downtown Chinatown that too many people just walk right by. Trust us: to go past this beautiful, authentic place is your loss. The food is fabulous, the prices are reasonable, and the people who run the shop are a pleasure. The Xialong Juice Pork Buns (known as Xia Long Bao) are the best we found in Toronto. Earlier today, I took a one-liter container to this restaurant and asked for hot and sour soup to take home. I was told it would be $5.64 with tax and I thought that was fine. But when I was handed the soup, it only filled a third of my container. It obviously was too little soup for even one person. I asked for more soup, and was charged another $5.64. When my container was filled with more soup, I saw that it was more water instead of more not-and-sour soup. I also took the menu to read on the bus and realized that I had been charged too much because a one-liter container would hold a medium-size soup and at this restaurant, a large-size soup (more than one liter) was only $8. Watch your step going down those shoddy stairs, you might fall into this dive accidentally. Definitely don’t go here on purpose. This place was absolutely disgusting, and I wanted to throw up right after eating. First off, the food wasn’t very good. Second, while we were sitting there eating, they all had an eating break, then proceeded to go back to work right after. Not a big deal there, however the one cook was picking his teeth with his fingers while preparing dumplings shortly thereafter . Then proceeded to go to the washroom, where there was no soap. Saw this restaurant and with the name though 'why not?! '. To begin, it was fine. Ordered pancakes and dumplings, both steamed and pan fried. The pancakes came 1st and were good. Then just before the dumplings came, the owner asked if we could move to another table...because there was a bigger group waiting. In the middle of the meal!!! Really unbelievable. She kept asking until we moved. Needless to say, the table we were moved to was uncomfortable. No discount was given for the inconvenience. So the max we are going to give is 3 stars...if the food was very good. Sad to say, the dumplings were not yummy. Shrimp ones were OK, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference in the fillings...
I've been to this dumpling house a number of times and always found the food very solid and better yet none of the long lineups of people that greet you at other dumpling places downtown. This certainly has nothing to do with the quality of food or service, in fact on this most recent visit I would say that the food was exceptional and a couple of my old standbys, the seaweed salad and the rolled beef pancakes were possibly the best that I'd ever had anywhere just teeming with flavour. I've brought many friends here and they're always impressed by the quality of the food.
Worst Restaurant in Toronto Chinatown. We noticed after 25 minutes that the waiter had served 3 more tables after us, I asked him where our Chinese food is. He said it's coming soon. Then my husband asked the waiter where our order is, he ignored us. Then the manager showed up and apologized for losing our food order. As a result we went back and went to King's Noodle Restaurant. The last time we went to Toronto, we had delicious Chinese food, so before our dinner reservations, I shifted gears to find a dumpling place. We went to Yummy Yummy Dumplings. We decided on boiled dumplings and steamed dumplings. They were delicious. I especially loved the boiled dumplings. My son preferred the steamed dumplings. They do not accept credit cards or non-Canadian debit cards. Please make sure to have some cash with you.
Everyone goes to nearby Mother's Dumplings or Dumpling House because they're better known and on much busier Spadina Avenue. But this place, just a few minutes walk away, has better dumplings than both. It's cheaper than Mother's and cleaner and quieter than Dumpling House. And the couple who run it are so kind and friendly. Neither speak the best English but the menu is bilingual and......it all works out just fine.
Great food! Great service! Service was so fast and always with a smile! Love this place! I find the restaurant clean and the food is delicious. The food was served piping hot and so fast, which was wonderful because we had 4 very hungry children with us. Big green tea too! If you love dumplings, this is the place to go!
