Basso in Clayton is located right across from a hotel. After struggling for parking in the hotel garage, I descended from the German architecture into a dimly lit sports bar and restaurant. The first thing you notice is that it’s dark and loud. It feels like a speakeasy but a little less forbidden! The restaurant was lit with gas lamps and the tables with candles! A friend and I were looking for somewhere to go that we hadn't been before and we sure are glad that we ended up at Basso. The underground/wine cellar atmosphere was cool, the cocktails were extremely on point and the food was amazing as well. I had lemon ricotta ravioli and if it wouldn't have been inappropriate, I would have picked my bowl up and licked the sauce off the dish. My friend had the brussel sprouts which were delicious, even though I don't particularly care for brussels sprouts. Wow. At my age and the amount of restaurants I have experienced over the years, it is difficult to elicit a wow from me. Walking into a dimly lit dining room made me nervous (like other reviewers), but this added to the vibe atmosphere because it was like visiting a restaurant in New York, by being located in the basement. Dalton our server gave good guidance with recommendations and descriptions. The calamari, heirloom tomato salad and papperdelle pasta dish were tasty and quickly served. I have recommended this restaurant to over 20 people, and all of them have returned multiple times. It's located in the basement next to Cheshire Inn, but it has a great atmosphere and consistently serves high-quality food.
Always have a great meal and time at Basso. Happy hour drinks are the way to do it. I've had several pasta dishes and all were great.
Our server Autumn was amazing. Would recommend getting on the wait list ahead of time, but the service and food is worth the wait.
I had a fantastic dinner! The atmosphere was really cool, especially for a hot summer day. The pizza was excellent too.
