We were in Niagara on the lake for our vacation and wanted to try Benchmark on a recommendation from a friend. It is a teaching restaurant where students run the kitchen and service. It is set up like a fine dining place with a limited menu. The menu has little dots on it to indicate if the meal is vegetarian, vegan or gluten free. This is where things began to go wrong. My partner has a gluten allergy which we mentioned and then ordered the polenta fries, a GF indicated dish. The server then came back and explained that the dish was not GF as they were deep fried in the same oil as normal breaded food. So we skipped the fries and ordered our mains. Was in the area for a family event and booked lunch there for a party of 6 including 2 young children. Seating is in a glass walled pavilion, bright with pleasant views. Tables are well spaced crowded or too noisy, nice ambiance and table settings. Staff is friendly. Nice wine land beer list including offerings made at the college - not over priced. Menu (lunch and dinner are same) which varies is good with several choices to meet varying tastes. In planning our girlfriend weekend every year, we try to plan to visit one new prospect for dining. This year, Benchmark did not disappoint in quality of food, environment or service.We shared a charcuterie board, tempura tofu entree, seared scallop entree, and blueberry peach tiramisu. The highlights of the charcuterie board were a surprising non-dry, not overly salted succulent corned beef and the Moscow salami --- a pungent pork salami spiced with cinnamon, allspice, juniper --- that was like nothing I'd ever tasted. We come to NOTL every year and started coming to Benchmark last year. This was our second visit. Our first blew is away, it was so amazing. We ordered the exact same food as the last time. We started with the Polenta fries which were delicious. For our mains, I had the turkey burger, and my wife the chicken sandwich. The food was just average this time around. Neither of us finished. Had lunch here and enjoyed a delicious watermelon and feta salad, followed by the fried tofu. Also tried the Niagara college wine and beer which were great! Sit on the patio if you can! It has a view of the vineyard and garden which was lovely on a hot summer day. The service was very friendly and prompt. Definitely worth the short drive out of downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake for this dining experience!
We recently had lunch in this unusual and wonderful restaurant. The kitchen is run by pleasant, professional and talented young chefs with a real flair for this creative cuisine. The owner/manager was on site and stopped to visit with us and explain their very unique orange wine offering. The food is fresh and prepared and presented beautifully! Great spot.
We love everything about the Benchmark. Beautiful location. Comfortable seating. The teacher supervising the dining room was a professional, proud of sharing her experience with her students and their guests. Great food, Very tasty. We would definitely come back. We only wish that this culinary institute was closer to home.
We enjoyed a great meal in a lovely setting. The menu is seasonal and a good value. The students did a great job in preparing and serving our meal. Nice environment, quiet, pretty good food experience. Recommend the lamb plate and the hamburger even when all plates were good. For Dessert I do recommend tiramisu , just its different than usual , not chocolate on it.
