We visited the Houghwood Golf Club restaurant as part of an 80th birthday celebration. This was my second time here, as we previously visited four years ago for another occasion. The first thing to note is as I played no part in booking the venue, I cannot comment on prices etc. However, I can comment on the experience. Last week we had visitors who had travelled from Nottingham and we booked Sunday lunch at Houghwood because of the great views, the friendly staff, and the fact that we had enjoyed good meals there in previous years. Sadly, we were very disappointed and embarrassed with the meal. My chicken was OK, but the other three had roast beef and it was 'stringy ', very thinly sliced and difficult to cut. The vegetables were also disappointing, a couple of stalks of broccoli and a sloppy mash that could have been carrot or sweet potato, with three roast small roast potatoes that were hard. After a round of golf in the rain with my brother, we sought shelter in the cafe. Unfortunately, we were greeted by a waitress with a cold attitude and poor people skills, who rudely inquired if we had made a reservation despite the empty tables. We sat in a corner and both noted her lack of politeness. We ordered coffee and unwrapped our sandwiches, unaware of the establishment's policy against outside food. Instead of politely informing us of the rule, the waitress was condescending and made sarcastic remarks. Her demeanor prompted us to leave. We chose Houghwood to celebrate my mum and dad's 50th wedding anniversary. We invited approx 50 people to join us for the celebration. We had a 3 course meal on a Sunday afternoon. On arrival the room was beautifully decorated and tables set out well. Beautiful views, great parking and excellent choice of drinks refreshments. We had a fabulous time. The food was exceptional, staff were friendly and helpful. All our guests gave fabulous feedback. We had a guest requiring wheelchair access and this was accommodated with ease. Previous experiences at this restaurant have been positive, but today's visit was disappointing. The portions of food were small and the Brussels sprouts were extremely tough, making them difficult to cut with a knife. This detracted from what should have been a pleasant Christmas lunch for us. Despite informing the staff twice about the issue with the sprouts, the response was simply that they would notify the chef. One would think that a chef should already know not to serve Brussels sprouts that are as hard as bullets to customers. We have previously recommended this restaurant, but unfortunately, we can no longer do so.
I recently enjoyed a fantastic Father's Day lunch celebration at this restaurant. Every dish was delicious and the service was outstanding. They were able to cater to all of our requests, providing a meal that everyone from age 10 to 90 enjoyed in a beautiful setting. I highly recommend this restaurant for a family gathering and we will definitely be returning in the future.
I’ve played golf here a few times and so booked in to see how the restaurant was. Wow! I was very pleasantly surprised! 5 of us had a Sunday Lunch and it was exceptional. Food was amazing and the staff were super attentive and friendly. Views out of the terrace were just the icing on the cake. Highly recommended.
The meal was very poor for everyone. Presentation amateur, quality poor,definitely not chef standard. The service was slow and slower. The 2 waitresses worked very hard to try to manage Serving food upstairs and downstairs, totally understaffed. Never again….

Took my mother in law to houghwood yesterday and to complement the stunning weather and glorious setting the food and service were fantastic. Probably the best meal out for some time and the new menu and chef at houghwood look to have got it just right !
Four of us went. Very disappointed with the main courses available and we thought the pork and the pie choices were not good. Questioned why most vegatables were not served with the pie meal and never got a response.
