Occasionally I hesitate to review a place in fear that too many people will rush there and destroy a hidden gem. Le Chien Fumant is such a place. We have gone here many times in the past two years and have been impressed every time. This is a tiny place, with six or so tables up against the front window and eight bar seats; and yet the small kitchen galley right behind the bar produces some of the best food in the city. The dishes written on the chalk board change often and only sound like standard fare. We went to Le Chien Fumant on our first day in Montreal. We arrived shortly after 7pm on a Thursday and luckily got two seats at the counter. We would still have to leave until 20:15, as even that space was reserved. The atmosphere is small, but very welcoming. The kitchen is open and is behind the bar counter. My wife and I ordered two starters, breaded squid is a smoked salmon with oil, balsamic vinegar and roe, and a main course, a breaded veal with linguini. To accompany a Canadian Pinot Noir. We ordered two entrees and three meals (beef tartare, calamari, braised beef tortellini, oxtail and oxtail) all were excellent! The dessert was a little disappointing, but still good (strawberry and rhubarb puff pastry). I wish I had made a note of the name of the waitress as she gave exceptional service. I saw her going to all the tables, always very attentive and without forgetting anything (water service, wine service, listening to our requests, etc., without forgetting that all her suggestions were very successful). I just love everything about this restaurant. The locally sourced food quality is excellent, the ambiance is cozy, funky and friendly, and the scale of the place is ideal along with the great music and atmosphere. My favorite spot to dine is at the counter, overlooking all the action in the kitchen. It's amazing to watch how Maksim, the co-owner of and chef creates mouth watering dishes. Nicolas, the co-owner owner, barman and manager is a great source of info regarding wines and spirits. I have brought countless friends and clients there, and all have walked away loving it. We had a fantastic meal at this restaurant, with excellent and attentive service. We enjoyed the gnocchi with truffles and the halibut as our main courses, along with delicious appetizers of eggplant, halloumi, and nectarine salad. The desserts were also amazing. We highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning in the future.
I have been a regular smoker for over 6 years, what fascinates me is that it is always good. Since day one, chef Max has not flinched or thrown in the towel, he amazes me at each visit, it's always delicious. Not to mention the service, which is excellent. The cocktail guy, Nicolas is very knowledgeable about wine. Well done!
Wonderful small place. Excellent food without unnecessary tricks. Long and impressive wine list. We managed to get a table for three without making a reservation but the place got packed so reservation is recommended. Almost two weeks in Canada now, Toronto and Montreal, and this place was the best so far.
If you wanna try something special, quaint, small, special, original, hip, local and neighborly, then don't pass this up.
