We thought on average Japnaese restaurants in Richmond must be good enough to compete in this city. We were wrong. We came here for dinner and expected a quality meal as we saw the restaurant was almost full. We ordered the bento box and tempura/chicken hot plate. Other than the tempura was somewhat acceptable, everything else was below expectations. The chicken was too salty and had little flavours. The sashimi was totally off the target. Our waitress Jennifer went above and beyond. I have a fish allergy so she was extra careful and if she didn't know if something has fish she did not hesitate to quickly go to the kitchen to ask. She was able to recommend some non fish related items that were fantastic!! She brought our food quickly (where it was still hot) even though it was really busy. It's more worth it if you go for late night dinner (after 8:30pm)! I really liked the Sunset Roll because of the seared salmon. The Bob's roll was also yummy because of the chopped scallop and BBQ Salmon Skin. I thought the Samurai Roll would have unagi more uniformly spread out but as you can see, some people would mainly get the avocado and some people would get the eel for each piece. Been ordering from this place for over half a decade now. It's a real good sushi place. Recommend visiting them after 8:30pm for special prices, though they don't take reservations after that time, so expect to wait 20-30 minutes, or even longer. Well worth the wait, though.
The staff was awesome! We were a group of at least 40 and they served us with a smile and tons of patience. The food was delicious, fresh and the prices made our meal a steal! We will return!

I have lived in the lower mainland for 35 years, and have eaten at probably 75 sushi restaurants. Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant is second only to Miku. Enough said.
