I have been going Pioneer for most of my adult life. 30+ years. we have hunting land)I stopped going a few years back. This place used to be a great value with good service and a line out the door. I went back this past weekend to give it another try. I remembered why I stopped going. For one the prices, 4 dollars for a fountain soda, 4 dollars for extra country gravy, etc. That alone turned a 14 dollar meal into a 22 dollar meal. Now the service was good and wait staff pleasant. I remember that they had the best open face sandwich, now they leave the skin in the mashed potatoes and not nearly as good. I will now go other places again that has more reasonable prices. No wonder there is no ch...
We used to stop here regularly on our trips north and always looked forward to it. However, our last few visits have been disappointing, and this morning marked our final attempt. The traffic congestion around the exit can be a hassle, but it usually feels worth it. Today, however, it felt different—there were plenty of staff members just standing around, sipping coffee and sitting at the counter. We were hungry and ready to eat. Someone seated us and casually threw a menu our way before walking off. Meanwhile, other diners had already placed their orders. Frustrated, we ultimately decided to get up and leave.
Our waitress was excellent, but the food was not good. Overpriced for darn near the lowest quality food I have ever had at any restaurant. $67 for 2 of us to eat (with the tip) and we didn't finish the Patti melts because the meat was so nasty looking, had no seasoning and a weird taste. French fries had no flavor either. Will never come here again. I would never leave a review based on the price but to pay that much and have a terrible meal is ridiculous.
I'm 70 and when my parents built our 2nd home near Minocqua when I was 12, we would stop at the Pioneer for lunch on the way up from Verona. There were 8 of us, I have 5 siblings. Food was always good and service quick so we could eat and be on our way. Great memories when I stopped Thursday on my way home to Madison.

Very limited menu, too much gravy.On my beef open face sandwich.I like The Onion rings and cheese curds.Hamburger that was bought was really nasty.Tasting atmosphere's okay service was good.
I like this place but $11 for a waffle and $3.00 for coffee? is just to much in my opinion. All the food was good but came out barely warm. Carol , our waitress, was excellent!
It's good food in a classic setting (not sure it's changed significantly for 40+ years). Personal and nothing fast food about it.
Only get by the place a few times a year but have never regretted their breakfast.
