I have been a loyal customer for years and have always adored this iconic restaurant. However, tonight's experience was disappointing. We went for dinner since they reopened for indoor dining, but the service was, to put it mildly, terrible. The waitresses were extremely rude, and the food did not meet expectations. We actually ended up canceling one of our meals—a simple chicken Parmesan—after we were informed there was no eggplant available. It took an unusually long time for our food to arrive, and the rest of our group had already finished eating after waiting nearly an hour, despite the fact that we were the only table in the restaurant. We also started with the meatball appetizer, which we found to be quite decent. If you can't make it for the Plum Tomato Pie—available only for a limited time each year during tomato season from mid-August to mid-September—you should still visit Salerno's Apizza in Stratford, Connecticut, to experience the authentic, nostalgic charm of an Italian pizzeria. It's reminiscent of the old-school spots anyone who grew up in the Northeast would remember visiting years ago. I haven't had a pizza from here in a while, but I decided to order one yesterday. When I arrived to pick it up at the designated time, it wasn't ready, so I waited a little longer. Unfortunately, when I finally got my pizza, it was undercooked and the cheese wasn't fully melted. It seemed like they might have rushed to make it in the 10 minutes I waited. This experience has made me rethink my pizza takeout choices. Sorry!
This restaurant is fantastic! The last meal we enjoyed consisted of a calzone and a meatball grinder. The genius of the grinder was that the meatballs were chopped up, ensuring that every bite was packed with meat and cheese. The calzone was made with scamorza cheese, which was absolutely amazing. I’m sorry to say that the pizza here is quite disappointing. I can only give it a maximum of 2 stars. The sauce lacks flavor, the cheese doesn’t have the rich taste you’d expect, and overall the experience was terrible. There are plenty of places nearby that serve high-quality pizza, so I recommend giving this one a skip!
The food is excellent, with generous portions and friendly staff. I dined in for dinner, and the price per person was between $10 and $20. I'm not sure about the parking space, but there is a free parking lot available.
The best pizza in town! There's a reason they've been in business for so long. The handmade pasta is incredible too! I can't recommend the food and service enough.
