Summary of our experience:1) Arrive at restaurant. Promptly seated, as there were several tables available.2) After 15 minutes a waiter visited the table to take our order. He didn't write anything down.3) 45 minutes after taking our order, and after we started to stare at our server each time he passed, he rushed over to our table with a plate of onion bhajee. He explained that "there was a mistake in the kitchen, so your food is delayed. But please have this for now. Your food will be out in 5 minutes." Ok, we'll go with it. If I go by a restaurant that seems to cater to adults only (loud music, cocktails, very trendy or exclusive etc) I don't even go in if I have children with me - this place however lookwd like a nice, ordinary restaurant in the old town part of Montreal. It was just after 5pm so they had just opened, and apart from our family of four there were only one couple there. I was a bit surprised that it took about ten minutes for the waiter to get our order. I asked to get my dishes (tikka massala and kashmiri) with paneer instead of chicken but he said it wasn't possible at all, paneer was only available in other sauces. we were staying in chinatown,the nearest Indian restaurant was Taj Mahal. The food is good but the service is pathetic. we ordered a couple of items. Had to listen to terrible racist comments from the server named "Ali" . Waited for awful long time for the food to arrive. My family and I were served half cooked meals and when questioned about it, Ali did not even care to replace the dish or fix it. We were surprised to see a mandatory 15% service charge on the bill and on top of that the machine prompts for additional tip. When asked about the double tipping situation, we were yelled at saying that we being brown people cannot afford to eat in "Taj Mahal". After a fortnight of travelling in Canada, we decided to try a curry for a change. We picked the Taj Mahal after literally walking past it and weren’t disappointed. The restaurant was quite busy and the service, although a bit slow, was very attentive.Whilst it wasn’t the best meal that we had ever had, it certainly wasn’t the worst. We had samosas and pakora to start, which were light and fresh. For the main course we had lamb sag and chicken madras. The portions were large and the meat was very tender. The sauce was also perfectly spiced.All in all, a nice change. If I lived in Montreal, I would go back.
We arrived right at the moment they opened in the afternoon, and we were HUNGRY! They bring you papadum and chutneys when you arrive, so we had a chance to peruse the menu. All the familiar Indian dishes were there, we had Shrimp, Dal, and an eggplant dish of some sort. they were all wonderful. The service was attentive. It's a bit more upscale environment with white linen tablecloths, their serving dishes are beautiful. Excellent experience overall. Price is about 10% more than we typically pay but because of the prime location we thought it was well worth it.
Dinner was perfectly fine but not special. The flavors were not as varied and deep as I expect with Indian food, but I would go back if I wanted some acceptable food. That said, I would not order the onion bahji as there was almost no onion taste involved.
I realle enjoyed the ambiance and the causy small place in okd port makes it appreciate it even more. The food was good but as an example the rice was a Little overcooked. The naan bread a little dry but overall i enjoyed the main dishes. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
