Didn't know what levels to expect. When it first enter the Builder Arms Hotel you think holy **** the noise level is unbelievable. It's a nice enough ambience but management don't care about deigning the place to allow sound to spread. It just bounces off the walls. It is incredibly noisy. The restaurant is obviously in another part of the hotel which was nice enough because of the low lighting but the noise was almost as bad. Tried this restaurant last week. Was extremely disappointed with the whole experience. When I called them that morning to book for 4 people I advised them that 2 could not have garlic and onion and one was a vegetarian. The website clearly states that there is a vegetarian option and they said they were happy to accommodate food intolerance when notice was given, as I had. We proceeded to go that night and ordered the 6 course menu option, as we had pre-ordered that morning. Clearly they have no idea what a vegetarian menu is as two of the courses they brought out for the vegetarian were fish. Not sure how many vegetarians eat fish. Vibrant small dining room tastefully decorated, quite noisy when full. I dined here with my husband and sister-in-law we had a late sitting, the staff were pretty non engaging and did not know what the dishes were when brought to the table, one waitress stopped mid sentence left the table with no explanation then returned to finish.. very strange. Price point was good but we all thought that the restaurant missed the mark, was trying to hard to be a 5 star or exclusive restaurant. At the end of our "experience" not one staff member asked how our food was or night, pretty disappointing. Although the food was good they have missed the mark as a total food experience package.

Our group had been recommended this restaurant. Initially we had trouble in locating it as the address in Gertrude Street is a typical suburban pub, and we thought we had the wrong address, however the entrance to the restaurant is around the corner off Gore St. The pub environment and the restaurant at the rear are two totally different worlds. My wife is a vegan and she had a really excellent choice of vegan dishes. My friends and I some delicious, and fresh whiting dishes, heirloom tomatoes, saffron & basil, aged duck and a delicious desert of black figs. We each enjoyed our tasty dishes and the pleasant friendly staff enhanced the dining experience
We had a lovely evening at Moon Under Water. The room does indeed give you that feeling of sitting under a full mooon. You can choose 3,4 or 6 courses. I opted for the vegetarian selection. My husband went non veg. He chose the Jamon Iberico, the chicken with truffle and the wagyu.All beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. My vegetarian selection was seasonal, globe and jerusalem artichoke, WA truffles, and a delightful contrast of flavours and textures. Great service too
Dined there recently and had an amazing night. The restaurant is situated in a pub so this tends to keep the staff grounded. No arrogance to be seen, but a friendly service and sensational food. We chose the 3 course option and each dish was perfect; good size, great flavours (the wagyu was a standout) and lots of extra nibbles and sides.Definitely going back, this restaurant will not disappoint !
Was impressed from initial booking and service right till after our dinner. The staff were unbelievably accomodating and happy to meet all guests dietry needs. The restaurant is well kept and quaint enought that i could have genuine conversations with my friends. Costing was more than appropriate and i very much look forward to visiting when im next in melbourne .

Family dinner booked at the last minute at Moon Under Water. Professional from start to finish - friendly welcome included. Beautiful food - 3 courses each was enough for us - the duck terrine was delicious as was the hapuka! All up a great night - pity it's closing soon. Go while you can!
